Let There Be Stripes Beanie

Lion Brand’s Tweed Stripes yarn has wonderfully long color changes which work great with crochet. Too often, striping yarns are made specifically for knitting with color changes that are too short for crochet.I took a chance on this yarn and am glad I did. The long color changes make it easy to get a striped look without actually having to change yarns and weave in all those ends. It is a bit scratchy but washing it with your favorite yarn wash or fabric softener should soften it up nicely.Oh, there are notes on measurements at end of the pattern just in case you want to use a different weight yarn.

Notes …
Working
  • Rounds – This beanie is not worked in continuous rounds but if you prefer to do so, skip joining with a sl st and making a ch 1 at the beginning of ea round. I preferred not to do this because I didn’t like the way the transition happened between the sc and dc rounds and working in rounds sometimes causes the piece to “twist.”
  • Standing Double Crochet – If you prefer using the standard beg dc instead of the sdc, smake a ch 3 at the beg of ea dc round instead of the ch 1, sdc.
  • More colors – If you’d like to add more color to this beanie, make the dc rounds in a different colorway.

Tips When Using a Different Yarn Weight
Below are some tips to use when using a different yarn weight and appropriate hook size:
Crown Starting with round 1, make Crown Increase Rounds until hat top center to edge measures:

  • 0-3 mths – 2″
  • 3-6 mths – 2.5-2.75″
  • 6-12 mths – 3-3.25″
  • 1-2 yrs – 3.25-3.4″
  • 3-10 yrs – 3.5″
  • 11 yrs – Adult Female – 3.6-3.75″
  • Adult Male – 4″

Don’t worry if the final increase round is a litter shorter than these measurements. Because of the dc rounds, this beanie will easily stretch to fit.

Sides Continue with rounds in Sides section (rep of 2 rounds sc, 1 round dc) until hat height from center top measures:

  • 0-3 mths – 4.25″
  • 3-6 mths – 5.25″
  • 6-12 mths – 5.5″
  • 1-2 yrs – 6″
  • 3-10 yrs – 6.75″
  • 11 yrs – Adult Female – 7″
  • Adult Male – 7.5″

These lengths will bring the edge of the hat to the top or middle of the ears. Continue in pattern if you’d like the hat to cover the ears more or to fold up as a brim.

  • 0-3 mths – 5″
  • 3-6 mths – 6-6.5″
  • 6-12 mths – 7″
  • 1-2 yrs – 7-7.5″
  • 3-10 yrs – 7.5-8″
  • 11 yrs – Adult Female – 8.5-9″
  • Adult Male – 10″

Refer to Bev’s Country Cottage for Preemie sizing

Edging Continue with Edging rounds.
Finishing Weave in ends making sure you weave them in vertically, i.e., from edge toward crown and back, so you don’t reduce the stretch. Wash and block as needed.
