Article & Pattern Submissions

10/6/14 – In process of being updated. Current instructions are still for the Publisher site and not yet updated for WordPress. If you’d like to submit a pattern, article, or review, please e-mail me and ask to be set up as an author – submit@crochetuncut.com. Current authors should still have their accounts active as they were ported over during the conversion process.

Please note that we cannot currently provide any compensation for any submissions, however, once we are established and get enough advertisers, we do plan on providing small payments for submissions and will pay this out retroactively once it is set up.

10/6/14 – Honorariums are now being provided as my income allows.

What we are looking for

  • Each issue will have a basic theme and articles and patterns submitted for that issue should be based on that theme. Tips and techniques do not have to follow the theme for the issue. This doesn’t mean that we won’t accept content that doesn’t go with the theme, but we’d prefer it.
  • Home decor items are welcome for any issue: doilies, curtains, bed covers, kitchen items, etc.
  • We encourage innovation, designs for and by men, and for plus-size women/men.
  • Submissions must be new, not published or shown anywhere else prior to submission to Crochet Uncut. This does not include use for private testing purposes prior to submission. Please e-mail me if you have questions.
  • Pattern submissions may not be of or include trademarked or licensed characters, logos, text, etc., unless you have a licensing agreement with the trademark/license owner. You will be required to prove that you have such a license before the pattern can be accepted and/or published.

Article and Pattern Format

  • Articles should have the article title, followed by the text with any images included in the order they should appear in the article. Articles should deal with crochet, working with fiber, handcrafted tools for use with crochet, trimming knit with crochet, etc. See Submitting Articles and Patterns for instructions on submitting your article. Patterns with both crochet and knit versions are also acceptable.
  • Patterns must follow the format provided in this template and contain at least one photo of the finished item and any charts or illustrations/photos needed. See Submitting Articles and Patterns below for instructions on submitting your pattern.
  • Articles and patterns must be written in American English.
  • Sizing must follow the guidelines provided at YarnStandards.com and as many sizes as possible included in the pattern.
  • Abbreviations must follow the ones provided at YarnStandards.com.
  • Hook sizes and terms must be in American English. Addition of measurements in millimeters is acceptable so those using non-American sizes can convert between the two.
  • Additional notes are included in the template.
  • If working in a word processor program, do not insert images into the document as they will be compressed too much to use.

Submitting Articles and Patterns

To submit articles and patterns:

  • Create an account and request author status:
    1. Send an e-mail to submit@crochetuncut.com requesting an account. Include your preferred user name, real first and last name, e-mail address you want to use, website/blog URL, and a short bio.
    2. Once you receive an e-mail that you are set as an author, log in to your account and change your password.
    3. In the user menu, click on Submit an Article. Link will not work if you have not been set as an author. You may need to clear your cache and reload the site in order for the submit article link to work.
  • Article submission:
    1. Enter the article title in the Title field.
    2. Copy the article text from your editing document and format as needed using the submission editor tools or by clicking on the HTML link.
    3. Add images as needed following the instructions given further down.

    5. Submitting an article certifies that article is your own work and copyrighted by you, grants permission for Crochet Uncut/Darlisa Riggs to publish the article on the Crochet Uncut website for the lifetime of the site, that you retain all copyrights to the article and images, and once the next issue of the magazine is released after publication of the article, that you can submit the article elsewhere for publication.
  • Pattern submission:
    1. Enter the pattern title in the Title field.
    2. Copy the pattern text/table from your editing document and paste into the form. Check format and use the form editing tools to correct as needed.
    3. Add images as needed following the instructions given further down.
    4. Select/set the following:

    6. Check the pattern template for any rules on writing the pattern, such as where to put turning chains or using repeats.
    7. Submitting a pattern certifies that pattern/design is your own work and copyrighted by you, grants permission for Crochet Uncut/Darlisa Riggs to publish the pattern on the Crochet Uncut website for the lifetime of the site, that you retain all copyrights to the pattern and images, and once the next issue of the magazine is released after publication of the pattern, that you can submit the pattern elsewhere for publication.
  • Inserting images:
    1. In the text field, click where the first image is to be inserted.
    2. Click on the Image button located under the text field and scroll down until you see the Browse Files button.
    3. Click on the button, then locate and select the image on your computer. You can select multiple images to upload at the same time if needed. Please make sure that the file names do not contain spaces.
    4. Click on the Start Upload button and wait until the Successful message is displayed.
    5. Scroll through the images and locate the correct image in the thumbnail view, then click on the Insert button above the thumbnails. Please note that the images are shown in alphabetical order, however, if the filename starts with a capital letter, it will be shown at the top of the images, while filenames that start with a small letter will be at the bottom of the images.
    6. Repeat as needed to insert additional images.Note: You may upload large versions of the images, just resize them in the text using the resize handles. When the patterns are reformatted into the pattern table format, the images will be resized. The large images can potentially be used as the front cover image as the PDF version of the issue requires large, hi-res images.
  • Technical Editing:
    1. Please review the guidelines provided in the templates for formatting and wording. Patterns submitted that do not follow these guidelines will be edited so as to provide consistency across each issue and to ensure that those new to crochet can easily understand the instructions just as easily as a more experienced crocheter.
    2. Submitted articles and patterns may have had some technical editing provided in order to follow our guidelines, however, the edited version remains the property of the original author/designer.

Submission Deadlines

  • Fall 2011 – 8/31/11
  • Winter 2011 – 10/31/11
  • Spring 2012 – 1/31/12
  • Summer 2012 – 4/30/12
  • Fall 2012 – 8/31/11
  • Winter 2012 – 10/31/12

If submitting a pattern for a specific issue, i.e., submitting for the Winter issue but before the Fall issue is published, add a line at the top of the pattern indicating what issue it is for so it will be held back until that issue is published.

Begin designing your patterns in time to ensure they can be adequately tested and reviewed before submissions. Submissions are accepted at any time prior to an issue being released up until one month before it is published. See dates listed above.

Issue Themes

Themes for each issue are as shown below, unless an issue has been specifically set aside for a special theme. Non-theme patterns are accepted as well.

  • Spring – Clothing and accessories suitable for warmer weather (transitional)
  • Summer – Clothing and accessories suitable for hot weather
  • Fall – Clothing and accessories suitable for cooler weather
  • Winter – Gifts, clothing and accessories suitable for cold weather

Ravelry Inclusion

Once an issue has been released, we will add each pattern to the Ravelry Pattern Database and add the link to each pattern page. Patterns will initially be listed as designed by Darlisa Riggs but once the pattern is published and has a link, it will be updated to reflect the actual designer. Patterns that include both a crochet and a knitted version will be listed separately.

Copyright

Authors retain all copyright to their articles and/or patterns but give Crochet Uncut the right to publish the article and/or pattern on their site for the lifetime of the issue it is published in. Crochet Uncut issues will be available indefinitely. Once the next issue is released, the article or pattern can be released by the author in any format they deem fit, while it continues to be available in the Crochet Uncut archives.

Usage for readers is available in the FAQs.
